Lived Experiences of Sri Lankans Hospitalized With Covid-19: A Mixed Method Study

    The Institute for Research and Development in Health and Social Care (IRD) is conducting a research project to explore the mental health outcomes and to describe the patient journeys among Sri Lankan adults hospitalised with suspected COVID-19 since March 8th 2020. This project is funded by the World Health Organization (WHO), Sri Lanka. The ethical approval for this study was obtained from the ethics review committee of Rajarata University of Sri Lanka and the administrative clearance was granted by the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka Navy and Colombo Municipal Council.

This project comprises both quantitative and qualitative components. The quantitative component will allow us to measure the burden of common mental health disorders such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety among the participants following discharge from the hospital. Whereas the qualitative component will comprise in-depth interviews with selected individuals which will help us to understand the main coping mechanisms used by the hospitalized adults throughout their patient journey. Stigma and quality of life following hospital discharge is another area this project will look into.

We shall approach over 1000 individuals for data collection from the first and second waves of the COVID-19 epidemic in 14 districts of the island. Currently data collection is going on and the outcomes of this project will play a significant role when developing health and social care policies to control COVID-19 epidemic in Sri Lanka.

ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ කොරෝනා ආසාදනය වීම නිසා රෝහල් ගත කළ පුද්ගලයන්ගේ ජීවන අත්දැකීම් පිළිබඳ අධ්‍යයනය

පසුගිය වසරේ මාස දහයක කාල සීමාවක් තුළ ලාංකික පුරවැසියන්ට කොවිඩ් 19 වසංගතයේ අවධි දෙකකට මුහුණ දීමට සිදු වූ අතර, ඉන් ඔවුනගේ ජීවිත අනපේක්ෂිත වෙනස්කම් රැසකට භාජනය විය. සෞඛ්‍ය ක්ෂේත්‍රය මුහුණ දුන් මෙම නව අභියෝගය හමුවේ කොවිඩ් ආසාදනයෙන් සුවය ලැබූ පුද්ගලයින්ගේ අත්දැකීම්වලින් බොහෝ දේ ඉගෙනීමට හැකියාව ඇත. මෙම අධ්‍යයනය “සෞඛ්‍ය සහ සමාජ ආරක්ෂණය පිළිබඳ පර්යේෂණ සහ සංවර්ධන ආයතනය” විසින් සෞඛ්‍ය අමාත්‍යාංශය, ආරක්ෂක අමාත්‍යංශය හා කොළඹ මහ නගර සභාවේ අවසරය සහිත ව දියත් කරනු ලබන අතර මෙයට මූල්‍ය දායකත්වය “ලෝක සෞඛ්‍ය සංවිධානය” විසින් සපයයි. ශ්‍රී ලංකා රජරට විශ්වවිද්‍යාලයේ ආචාරධර්ම කමිටුව විසින් මෙම අධ්‍යයනය සඳහා ආචාරධර්ම අනුමැතිය ලබා දී ඇත.

අධ්‍යයනයේ දත්ත රැස් කිරීම ප්‍රමාණාත්මක සහ ගුණාත්මක යන ප්‍රධාන පර්යේෂණ ක්‍රම දෙක ඔස්සේ සිදු කරනු ලැබේ. ප්‍රමාණාත්මක ක්‍රමවේදය ඔස්සේ ආසාධිත පුද්ගලයන්ගේ විශාදය හා කාංසාව වැනි මානසික තත්ත්ව පිළිබඳ ව විමසා බලනු ඇත. ගුණාත්මක ක්‍රමවේදය ඔස්සේ ඔවුන් සමග සම්මුඛ සාකච්ඡා පවත්වා ඔවුන්ගේ අත්දැකීම් පිළිබඳ ව විමසා බලනු ඇත.

මාස 10ක කාලයක් තුළ දිස්ත්‍රික්ක 14ක වෙසෙන පුද්ගලයන් 1000ක පිරිසක් දත්ත දායකයන් ලෙස සම්බන්ධ කර ගැනීමට අධ්‍යයනයේ දී බලාපොරොත්තු වන අතර, මෙරට කොවිඩ් වසංගත තත්ත්වය පාලනය කිරීමේ දී අවශ්‍ය වන සෞඛ්‍ය සහ සමාජ ආරක්ෂණ ප්‍රතිපත්ති සම්පාදනය කිරීමට මෙහි දී හෙළි වන තොරතුරු වැදගත් වනු ඇත.
